Search Basics: Subject Guides and Picking Databases

Using a specific scholarly database can be like using a spotlight instead of a lantern. Using the library’s default OneSearch is like using a lantern to see the world of information, but sometimes you need a more precise tool to illuminate specialized content.

OneSearch is a general database with lots of content. In contrast, CINAHL Complete is a specialized database that can be very useful for anyone in the allied health professions, such as nursing.

How can you find specialized databases in your field? If you are new to academic research, try using the Subject Guides created by the university librarians to help students and researchers in specific fields of study. Discover search tools tailored to your needs.

From history to dance, and biology to anthropology, you are likely to find a subject guide that matches your scholarly project.

Go to the library homepage and select the tab that says "Subject Guides." Use the drop-down menu and select the most relevant subject for your needs. Find contact information to subject librarians who help researchers pick the best databases and provide useful help with the research process. Take a look and expand your search possibilities today.
